Freshly engaged? CONGRATS! After you’ve finished soaking up all of the post-proposal excitement with your loved ones, it’s time to start planning your engagement photos!
If you’re anything like me, you probably don’t want your photos to look like everyone else’s.
These photos are SO important. They will be used on your wedding invites, save the dates, plastered on social media, and on your walls to be cherished for the rest of your lives! Basic & boring just won’t cut it.
Your engagement session should be nothing short of unique, authentic, and full of love – just like the love you have for each other (slightly cheesy, but TRUE)! To help you execute the engagement session of your dreams, I’m sharing 5 tips on how to plan an epic engagement session.
If you don’t already have a location in mind, your engagement session is the perfect excuse to plan a new adventure. Think of your personalities, your interests, and what types of scenery best represent your relationship. This could look like anything from snow-capped mountains, to an ocean cliffside. Maybe waterfalls are your thing- or luscious green forests. The possibilities are really endless, as long as you’re up for an adventure. And if you’re not sure, ask your photographer for some recommendations!
Lighting is not to be looked past when choosing the time of day you want to have your engagement photos taken. Most people aim to achieve that warm, glowy, golden-hour essence in their photos. In this case, you’ll want to be at your location and ready to be photographed either within an hour of sunrise or sunset. Although it depends on the timeline you’re working with, and how far out your wedding is, the time of year can also play a BIG role in your photos. If sunshine is out of the question, don’t worry! More often than not, fog, rain, and overcast skies can actually create an even more unique and stunning session. (That’s my personal favorite weather to photograph in!)
Styling outfits for your engagement session can feel overwhelming. The best rule of thumb is to choose pieces with neutral or muted tones (these tend to photograph the best) and feel like you. Make sure it’s something that you feel comfortable, yet confident in. Try to stay away from bold patterns, logo shirts, & loud colors. You don’t want your outfits to take away from the scenery, or be the main focus of your photos. If you are hiking to your location, make sure to bring a change of clothes so your main outfits don’t get dirty or sweaty on the way there. And of course, don’t forget comfy shoes!
Getting into the right mindset for your session is so important. Try your best to come into your shoot with an open mind, and be ready to have fun and let loose. Plan on doing something enjoyable together the night and/or morning before your session. Maybe grab a bite to eat at your favorite restaurant together, or grab a beer to unwind at you’re a favorite brewery. Taking the time to have some fun, and focus on each other will help ease any pre-photo jitters. In addition, getting the romance flowing before your shoot will make for some seriously amazing and passionate photos.
Of course, you may know a photographer or two. However, not every photographer will be the right one for you. Get to know your photographer’s shooting and editing style to make sure it emulates the look you’re going for. On top of their work, their personality is HUGE. Having a photographer that meshes well with you will help you feel much more comfortable when capturing these intimate moments. I always bring fun and joyful energy to ALL my shoots! After all, your engagement session should be about more than just the photos. It should be a fun and memorable experience with your boo!
