Knowing the right questions to ask your wedding photographer before booking can make all the difference in finding someone whose work you love and whose presence makes you feel completely comfortable.

I started my photography journey in 2017, and over the years I’ve learned that being a great wedding photographer involves so much more than knowing how to use a camera.

It’s about anticipating moments, working alongside other vendors, navigating different lighting conditions, and helping couples feel comfortable throughout the day.

Don’t be afraid to ask how many weddings a photographer has documented and what kinds of celebrations they typically photograph.

2. How Would You Describe Your Photography and Editing Style?

Your wedding photos are one of the few things you’ll get to hold onto long after the flowers have dried and the last song has played. They tell the story of your day, preserve the little moments you might have missed, and bring you right back to how it all felt.

Pay attention to how they handle different lighting situations, especially indoor ceremonies and darker receptions. Most importantly, notice how the photographs make you feel.

Can you feel the emotion? Do the candid moments look natural? 

Those details matter just as much as the beautiful portraits.

4. What Is It Like Working With You on a Wedding Day?

I genuinely wish more couples asked this question!

Your photographer isn’t just showing up to take pretty pictures. They’re going to be right there with you for some of the most meaningful moments of your life.

So, how do they approach the day?

Do they help with timelines? How do they handle unexpected changes?

There’s something so special about waking up after your wedding and getting to relive a few favorite moments while everything still feels fresh.

12. How Long Will It Take to Receive Our Full Wedding Gallery?

Every photographer has their own editing process and delivery timeline. Some galleries are delivered within a few weeks, while others take several months.

Neither necessarily tells you everything about the quality of the work, but it’s important to know what to expect.

My typical wedding gallery turnaround is 4–6 weeks.

Before booking, make sure the estimated delivery timeline is clearly outlined in your photography contract.

13. What Is Your Cancellation or Rescheduling Policy?

I know, I know. Nobody wants to think about canceling or rescheduling their wedding!

But unexpected things can happen, and it’s always better to understand your options beforehand.

Make sure you understand the payment schedule, what is included in your agreement, and when your date is officially secured.

Here’s my biggest piece of advice: pay attention to how you feel when talking with a photographer.

Do they listen to you? Do they seem genuinely interested in your relationship and your vision for the day?

Do you feel comfortable asking questions?

Of course, their photography should be something you absolutely love.

But you also deserve someone who values your experience, respects your priorities, and understands that your wedding is about so much more than creating beautiful images.
