Many engaged couples are ditching the tradition of waiting until the ceremony to first see each other on their wedding day! This wedding trend is gaining more popularity, and it’s called a “First Look”. After 5 years of experience in photographing weddings, I recommend every couple adds a First Look to their wedding day timeline.
A first look is when you first lay eyes on each other in an intimate setting, usually alone, before the ceremony (well, alone plus a photographer of course… a moment that special needs to be captured!). It’s typically a 15-30 minute window of time before the ceremony starts that allows the two of you to really take it all in together, free of distractions.
I know what you’re thinking…” what about the ceremony, won’t the moment be ruined?” In my experience as a wedding photographer, absolutely not. I’ve seen a lot of wedding ceremonies, with and without first looks. I can honestly say, the couple’s reactions at a ceremony after a first look are equally genuine, emotional, and heartwarming as the couple’s that had a wedding ceremony without a first look. The photo below is one of my past grooms seeing his bride walk down the aisle after doing the first look… his face says it all.
First looks are amazing because they give you time to hold each other, calm each other’s nerves, and spend some time together (you can even read your vows!) before the ceremony, without the pressure of a crowd watching you do so. Oh, and the photos… might just be the best part!
Okay, I may be a bit biased… but seriously, they’re pretty hard to beat. First off, you’re allowing yourself more time with your guests (did someone say cocktail hour?!) by taking the most important photos before the ceremony. Second, you’ll both be looking your best for your photos in your crisp tux + dress, and fresh hair and makeup. But most importantly, the initial reaction photos from first looks are always SO. DANG. GOOD.
The moment a couple sees each other for the first time on their wedding day is always an emotional one. However, there’s something about saving that moment for just the two of you that tends to pull the rawest, most vulnerable, and authentic emotion out of couples. The result- some beautifully tear-jerking photos.
If so, YAY. Your wedding day should look exactly how you want it to!
